Finding Your Passion
January 9th, 2008Sometimes the turning point in life can come from hitting rock bottom. Many of the most successful people in the world only found their passion and life purpose after enduring a painful and confronting ‘long, dark night of the soul.’ According to Anthony Robbins, one of the world’s most successful motivational trainers, discontent and even extreme emotional pain over our current circumstances can be a very positive thing. It can drive a person to be willing to do anything to change their lives. Out of such experiences, people are far more likely to search for meaning in their lives and dig deep to understand themselves better than if they would be if they would be if they were simply vaguely unhappy.
Tony Robbins found himself at an all time low in his life when he was avoiding debt collectors living in a tiny apartment that didn’t even have a kitchen. He washed his dishes in the bath! He confesses that these devastating circumstances drove him to find out what he had done wrong before and how to make newer and better decisions. He spent time really thinking about what he wanted to be, do and have in life and how he could live with passion and on purpose. He refers to this approach as designing a life rather than simply making a living. Because he was determined and passionate about what he was doing he was able to turn his life around and become successful across all areas of his life including financially.
What Tony Robbins discovered along with countless other highly successful individuals is that passion and a sense of purpose go hand in hand. It is the desire about something you feel put on the planet to do. Passion and purpose help us to live a life of significance rather than simply one of survival. The great thing about this is that the more significant our life becomes in terms of how we can benefit the lives of others and the world as a whole, the more driven we become about our lives. The more passionate we become the more empowered we become to live our lives with purpose. We become more productive, more successful and even make more money! There is no downside to living our lives with genuine passion.
Choosing to live a life of passion despite your current circumstances will take courage, commitment and faith. Although in the long run this choice will reap enormous rewards, you will need to be willing to live your life consciously based on passion and purpose even when there are no financial rewards in sight. Your commitment to living an authentic life will lead to excellence and ultimately financial reward if you are persistent, patient and determined.
Living with fire and a sense of purpose can give us a reason to get up in the morning. It imparts an awareness that the world will be a better place for us having been in it. Living with passion is about rising above our circumstances, trusting ourselves, discovering our own inner truth and acting in harmony with it. When we focus on something larger than ourselves we can move beyond making a living to designing a life.
